"Stepping back from the ups and downs, though, the Diamondbacks are almost exactly where they were supposed to be. I had them going 83-79 and outscoring their opponents by six runs. They’re 69-62, an 85-77 pace, and have been outscored by three runs. Carroll, Christian Walker, and Evan Longoria have been better than projected; Alek Thomas and the young starting pitchers have been worse. I said they’d have “some of the best outfield defense in baseball;” Statcast says the group is sixth. They looked like a wild-card contender, but no threat to the Dodgers; they’re in the third wild card slot and three parsecs behind the Dodgers."
