Still, the Rays have a four-game lead over the Yankees and they hold the tiebreaker at the moment, up 6-3 with four head-to-head games left. PECOTA, FanGraphs, and Clay Davenport all give the Rays an 83-85% chance to win the AL East, and with it the overall #1 seed in the AL. I’m a little more skeptical, in part because the schedules of these two teams diverge wildly over the next two weeks. The Yankees play two more with the Rockies, then take on the Mets, Twins, and Diamondbacks. The Rays have two more with the Braves, then catch the Astros, A’s, and Red Sox. Three easy series for the Yankees, three tougher ones for the Rays. That all leads into the four-game showdown in the Bronx starting September 21.
This race isn’t over. The Yankees are just about at full strength while the Rays are not, and that is going to be a big part of the AL East story over the season’s final 19 days.
