There are two problems here. One, it’s no longer clear whether Kristian Campbell can hit. He’s 24 and he’s had one good year as a pro. In both the majors and minors last year, he had miserable batted-ball quality, enough to call into question those prospect rankings from a year ago. He’s also been moved around so much that it’s hard to know whether he’ll be good defensively at any position, though keeping him up the middle and giving him one task to learn is a good move by the Sox.

The second problem is opportunity. When all the soldiers return from war, Campbell is sixth on the outfield depth chart, third at first base, third at second base. He hasn’t played third base or shortstop since 2024 and probably isn’t an option at either any more. Forget getting him into the lineup, I can’t find a place for him on the roster, and that’s now, before Triston Casas and Romy Gonzalez get healthy.
